San Quentin Xways at a glance

The central distinction is between changing the number of symbols and multiplying their contribution. xWays, Razor Split and Jumping Wilds do different jobs; the bonus combines them.

Inside the game

How San Quentin Xways works

Read the normal reel positions and the Enhancer Cells separately before following the persistent Lockdown state.

Base structure

Five reels, three rows and 243 ways

The inspected rules describe: Wins pay from the leftmost reel to the right across adjacent reels. The “xWays” name matters because Enhancer Cells can change the number and structure of symbols on a reel.

  • 5 reels;
  • 3 standard rows;
  • 243 win ways by default.

Enhancer Cells

Each reel has locked Enhancer Cell positions above and below the normal reel. When opened, an Enhancer Cell can reveal: These cells are not permanently active in the base game. They are unlocked by Bonus-symbol events.

  • one of the five top-paying inmate symbols;
  • Wild;
  • Razor Split;
  • xWays.

One or two Bonus symbols

Landing one or two Bonus symbols in the base game: This gives the base game access to the enhancement mechanics without triggering Lockdown Spins.

  • turns the Bonus symbol into a Wild;
  • opens the Enhancer Cells on that reel.

xWays

An xWays symbol reveals matching regular paying symbols in a four-high stack. If xWays appears in both active Enhancer Cells on the same reel, the rules describe the reel becoming covered by eight singleton Wilds.

Razor Split

Razor Split divides regular symbols on its reel into additional positions. Top and bottom Razor Split cells can apply the split twice. It changes the reel structure rather than simply doubling the cash win.

Split Wild

A Split Wild can land in the main game on any reel. It splits the regular symbols on the same reel, but does not split itself.

Lockdown Spins

Three or more Bonus symbols trigger Lockdown Spins.

The number of triggering Bonus symbols sets the initial Jumping Wild count:

Lockdown Spins

  • 3 Bonus symbols → 1 Jumping Wild;
  • 4 Bonus symbols → 2 Jumping Wilds;
  • 5 Bonus symbols → 3 Jumping Wilds.

The reels where those Bonus symbols landed have their Enhancer Cells opened for the entire feature.

Starting state

Before Lockdown Spins begin:

  • the starting spin count is the sum of values 1, 2 or 3 revealed in opened Enhancer Cells;
  • the inmate-mystery result assigns a multiplier to a selected paying inmate or Jumping Wild;
  • the trigger establishes one, two or three Jumping Wilds.

Jumping Wilds

A Jumping Wild moves to a random normal reel position on each spin. When it lands on a reel with Razor Split, its multiplier doubles and the increased multiplier persists for the rest of Lockdown Spins. The multiplier also counts as the number of Wilds represented at that position. Maximum Jumping Wild count is three.

Additional Bonus symbols

Landing a Bonus symbol during Lockdown Spins: This creates progression during the feature: more reels can become enhanced and the Jumping Wild state can improve.

  • opens the relevant reel’s Enhancer Cells;
  • awards extra spins;
  • turns the Bonus into another Jumping Wild, subject to the feature cap.

Bonus Buy

The first-party provider page describes three direct Lockdown entry levels:

Bonus Buy

  • 3 Bonus symbols: 100× bet;
  • 4 Bonus symbols: 400× bet;
  • 5 Bonus symbols: 2,000× bet.

Those prices correspond to different starting Jumping Wild counts and therefore materially different initial states.

RTP, volatility and bet range

Trusted provider data contains two RTP configurations:

  • 96.03%;
  • 94.11%.

96.03% and 94.11% are provider configurations. The active version depends on the casino’s game configuration.

Provider page:

  • volatility: High;
  • bet range: 0.20 to 32;
  • release year: 2021.

Maximum payout

The inspected game rules set the maximum payout at 150,000× the base bet.

If total win reaches the cap, Lockdown Spins end and the capped amount is awarded.

This is a game payout cap, not a maximum Wild multiplier.

Enhancer Cell state map

Locked Enhancer Cell → Bonus symbol opens the reel → top/bottom cells become active → reveal: inmate / Wild / Razor Split / xWays

During Lockdown Spins, opened cells remain active on the reels that triggered the feature.

That persistent reel-level state is more important than any single enhancer result.

xWays and Razor Split compared

These mechanics both increase effective symbol presence but by different routes.

xWays

Reveals matching regular symbols in a four-high stack. Two xWays enhancers on the same reel can produce the special eight-Wild reel state described by the rules.

Razor Split

Cuts existing regular symbols into smaller pieces. Top and bottom Razor Split enhancers can split twice.

Jumping Wild multiplier progression

  1. Start with moving Wilds

    Three, four or five triggering Bonus symbols give one, two or three Jumping Wilds.

  2. Land on a split reel

    A Jumping Wild that lands on a reel with Razor Split doubles its multiplier.

  3. Keep the increase

    The increased value carries through the rest of Lockdown. At that position, the multiplier also represents the number of Wilds.

Common misunderstandings

243 ways is only the default structure

Enhancers can change symbol counts and effective ways.

One or two Bonus symbols are still useful

They open Enhancer Cells and turn into Wilds even though they do not trigger Lockdown Spins.

Razor Split does not directly double the win

It changes symbol structure. Jumping Wild multipliers can double when interacting with Razor Split during Lockdown.

150,000× is the game cap

It is not a Jumping Wild multiplier.

Paying symbols and feature symbols

Paying inmates and objects

Ordinary symbols make the adjacent-reel combinations. The paytable shows inmate portraits and prison objects as separate paying symbols.

Wild and Split Wild

Wild substitutes in combinations. Split Wild also divides regular symbols on its reel, while remaining unsplit itself.

Bonus and Enhancers

Bonus symbols open cells and can trigger Lockdown. The cells can reveal inmates, Wild, xWays or Razor Split; these are distinct effects rather than interchangeable bonus symbols.

Player fit

Good fit:

  • players who enjoy xWays/xSplit interactions;
  • players who like persistent Free Spins state;
  • players comfortable with expensive buy tiers;
  • players who want highly visible feature progression.

Less suitable:

  • players who prefer fixed paylines;
  • players who want a small number of mechanics;
  • players who dislike very high buy multipliers.

Base game versus Lockdown state

Base game state

Base game state

  • default 243 ways;
  • Enhancer Cells begin locked;
  • one or two Bonus symbols can open individual reels without triggering the full feature;
  • Split Wild can appear;
  • the board can already gain xWays / Razor Split effects through opened Enhancers.

Lockdown state

Lockdown state

  • the trigger creates 1–3 Jumping Wilds;
  • triggering reels start with active Enhancer Cells;
  • the feature has its own spin count and multiplier state;
  • new Bonus symbols can continue opening reels and extend the feature;
  • Jumping Wild multipliers can persist and grow.

Example interaction: Bonus → Enhancer → xWays

One or two Bonus symbols can open the Enhancer Cells without starting Lockdown. Follow the affected reel as the Bonus becomes Wild and the top and bottom cells reveal their effects.

Example interaction: Bonus → Enhancer → xWays

  • One Bonus symbol lands on reel 3 in the base game.
  • It turns into a Wild and opens reel 3’s Enhancer Cells.
  • One Enhancer reveals xWays.
  • The xWays effect reveals a four-high stack of the same paying symbol.
  • The number of possible winning combinations on that reel increases for the current evaluation.

The useful lesson is that a Bonus symbol can improve the base board even when it does not reach the three-symbol feature trigger.

Example interaction: Jumping Wild → Razor Split

Another rules example:

Example interaction: Jumping Wild → Razor Split

  • Lockdown Spins has an existing Jumping Wild multiplier.
  • Razor Split is active on a reel.
  • The Jumping Wild lands on that reel.
  • Its multiplier doubles.
  • The new multiplier value remains for later Lockdown spins.

That persistence is why an early Razor Split interaction can matter more than the same interaction on the final spin.

Inmate multipliers during Lockdown

Before Lockdown, the revealed inmate state can assign an additional multiplier to a randomly selected symbol, including a Jumping Wild. The result has different meanings depending on the target.

On an ordinary paying symbol, the multiplier increases that symbol’s payout. On a Jumping Wild, it represents Wild multiplicity at the position. This is separate from the later doubling caused by landing on a Razor Split reel.

Entry cost and starting Wild count

The cost ladder is unusually steep:

  • 100×;
  • 400×;
  • 2,000×.

The payout cap and its simulated frequency

The saved rules list a 150,000× payout cap and a simulated maximum-win frequency of one in 2,000,000,000 rounds. The frequency is a simulation result for that rules configuration, not a prediction for a session.

Reaching the cap ends Lockdown and awards the capped amount. It is separate from a Jumping Wild multiplier and from the number of ways on a reel.

For reading an ordinary feature, the useful information is which Enhancer Cells are active, where the Jumping Wilds move and which multipliers they retain. The cap cannot tell you how those states will develop.

04 / The SlotsCollector take

San Quentin xWays: our take

Open Enhancer Cells and build Jumping Wild multipliers through Lockdown Spins.

San Quentin xWays is difficult to describe well with a normal slot fact table because almost every important mechanic changes the structure of the reels.

The default board is simple enough: five reels, three rows, 243 ways. But the top and bottom Enhancer Cells mean the visible three-row board is only the starting state.

The first useful distinction is between Bonus symbols that trigger a feature and Bonus symbols that only open Enhancers. One or two Bonus symbols do not start Lockdown Spins. Instead, they upgrade the affected reel by opening its Enhancer Cells and turning the Bonus into a Wild.

Once an Enhancer Cell opens, the reel can receive xWays, Razor Split, Wilds or high-paying symbols. xWays increases symbol presence; Razor Split increases symbol density by dividing regular symbols. These are structural effects rather than simple payout multipliers.

Lockdown Spins add the persistent layer. The trigger count matters because it sets how many Jumping Wilds the feature starts with. A five-Bonus trigger is therefore not merely “the same bonus with more symbols” — it begins with three moving Wilds instead of one.

Jumping Wilds become particularly important when Razor Split is active. A Wild landing on a Razor Split reel doubles its multiplier and keeps that increased value for the remainder of the feature. That interaction is the feature’s central progression mechanic.

The 100×, 400× and 2,000× purchases correspond to three, four and five starting Bonus symbols. They therefore begin with different Jumping Wild counts, rather than offering the same starting state at three prices.

San Quentin xWays is a strong fit for players who enjoy complex reel manipulation and persistent bonus state. It is not a good fit if you want a fixed grid whose rules remain visually identical from base game to bonus.

What are Enhancer Cells?

Locked positions above and below the reels that can reveal high-paying symbols, Wild, Razor Split or xWays when activated.

What happens with one or two Bonus symbols?

They turn into Wilds and open the Enhancer Cells on their reels. They do not yet trigger Lockdown Spins.

How do you trigger Lockdown Spins?

What does Razor Split do?

It splits regular symbols on its reel into smaller positions. Top and bottom Razor Split effects on the same reel can apply the split twice.

What do Jumping Wilds do?

They move to random reels each spin. If they land on a Razor Split reel, their multiplier doubles and persists for the rest of the feature.

How much does Bonus Buy cost?

The provider describes 100×, 400× and 2,000× entry levels for three-, four- and five-Bonus starting states.

What is the RTP?

What is the maximum win?

150,000× the base bet.

What happens when only one Bonus symbol lands?

It does not trigger Lockdown Spins. It opens the Enhancer Cells on that reel and becomes a Wild.

Can Jumping Wild multipliers decrease?

The retained rules describe their doubling and persistence through Razor Split interaction, without establishing a decrease mechanic.

Does xWays change reel height permanently?

It changes the current symbol structure and evaluation. Whether state persists follows the specific Enhancer rule.
